Do-It-Yourself: Save Money and Gain Confidence Around the House

You don’t always need to hire a handyman to get things done around your home. With a little time, some basic tools, and the right attitude, you’d be surprised how many everyday tasks you can take care of yourself. Not only does it save you money, but doing it yourself also gives you a sense of pride and independence.

Here are a few simple things you can tackle on your own—and a few tips to help you along the way.

1. Paint Touch-Ups and Small Projects

Have scuff marks or fading paint? A small can of matching paint, a roller, and a little painter’s tape is all you need. You don’t need to repaint the whole wall—just clean the area, do a light sanding if needed, and touch it up. It’s easier than it looks, and very satisfying.

2. Fixing Holes in the Wall

Small holes from nails or picture hangers? Grab some spackle, a putty knife, and a bit of sandpaper. Fill it in, smooth it out, and once it dries, paint over it. Boom—like it never happened.

3. Replacing Air Filters

This is one of the most overlooked tasks, but it’s super important for keeping your home’s air clean. Most air filters just slide right out and can be swapped in seconds. Set a reminder every 2–3 months and you’re golden.

4. Tightening Loose Cabinet Handles or Furniture

Loose knobs, wobbly chairs, or squeaky hinges? Nine times out of ten, all it takes is a screwdriver or a wrench. Tighten it up and you’re good to go. A little wood glue can also work wonders for minor furniture fixes.

5. Cleaning Out Drains

Slow drain in the sink or tub? Before calling for help, try pouring a mix of baking soda and vinegar down the drain, followed by hot water. A cheap drain snake (found at any hardware store) can also clear out hair and gunk quickly.

6. Caulking the Tub or Sink

Old, cracked caulk can make your bathroom look run-down and even cause mold. Luckily, removing and replacing it is easy with a tube of waterproof caulk and a caulking gun. Just take your time, and you’ll have a clean, fresh seal in no time.

Why DIY?

Doing things yourself doesn’t mean doing everything yourself. But knowing how to handle the basics saves you time, teaches you new skills, and helps you feel more confident in your own home. And if you ever run into a project that’s a little out of reach—that’s when you call in the pros.
